Obituary

Mr. Arlie L. Smith, 81, of Adel, Georgia passed away September 15, 2018 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.  Mr. Smith was born April 27, 1937 in Lowndes County to the late Burrie Jones Smith and Cleva Tyson Smith Tindell.  He lived in Valdosta before moving to Cook County 38 years ago.  He was a member of the Adel First Assembly of God Church and was an Army paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division; 503rd Infantry.  He retired from the Air Force as a Tech Sergeant where he was a paratrooper in the 82nd D Airborne Division and served during the Vietnam Conflict.  Mr. Smith later retired from the Lowndes County Sheriff's Department and Tax Assessor's Office.  He also served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Cook County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. Barbara Franks Reed Smith of Adel; four daughters and sons-in-law: Julie Smith Hurst and Padon Hurst of Valdosta, Debra Smith Williams of Columbus, Georgia; Leigh Reed Sears and David Sears; Lana Reed Daughtrey and Duke Daughtrey, all of Adel; daughter-in-law, Lori Reed of Thomasville, Georgia; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jack West of Adel; 15 grandchildren: Trent Williams of Adel; Shadley, Trevor and Jake Hurst, all of Valdosta; Parker and Allie Nix of Pooler, Georgia; Jamie Sears of Adel; Adam, Hannah, Jordan and Erinn Reed, all of Thomasville; Peyton, Barbara, Dillon and Luke Daughtrey, all of Adel.  Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his son, Jeff Reed; a granddaughter, Sarah Reed; and three brothers: Rentz, Billie and Bobby Smith.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at the Adel First Assembly of God Church with Rev. Eric Gordon officiating.  Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery Annex.  Visitation was held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, September 17, 2018 at Boone Funeral Home. Inc.; 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave.; Adel, Georgia.  Steve Meders sang "The Anchor Holds;" other special music selections were "Over in the Glory Land" and "This Train is Bound for Glory."  Kirk Hand, Leon George, Toby Heard, Don Huckaby, Jack West and Guy Mathis served as active pallbearers; the Adel Masonic Lodge and the Cook County Vietnam Veterans Chapter served as honorary pallbearers.
