Bettye Carolyn Shannon Willis Hancock went to be with the Lord and her departed loved ones on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. She was born on October 19, 1933, to Frank and Jewel Parker Shannon at their home near Lenox, Georgia.
For most of her adult life, she lived on a farm in the West Berrien Community. She is preceded in death by her beloved children, Stacy Hancock Stacey and Michael Hancock; her husband, Sonny Hancock, and her adoring parents, Frank and Jewel Parker Shannon.
Miss Hancock retired as a civilian employee from Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia. There she worked with the first IBM computer model sold commercially. She told her grandchildren that the computer was the size of an entire room. She also managed the on-base clothing store.
Mrs. Hancock is survived by her daughter, Kelly Castleberry of Washington; her sisters, Doris Shannon Varnadoe Mitchell of Tennessee and Judy Shannon Vincent of Texas; her stepmother, Helen Gibbs Shannon also of Texas; grandchildren, Parker Castleberry, Jey Castleberry, and Mary Castleberry Nathanson of Washington, Lauren Castleberry Porter of North Carolina, and Stacy Hancock Guck of Tennessee; eleven great grandchildren; two nephews and one niece, and many cousins. Additionally, she is survived by her dear friends Jewel Bryan and Jo Hartman.
Mrs. Hancock's hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles, and enjoying wildlife. She was a superstar in the kitchen. One of her favorite endeavors was planning, preparing, presenting, and sharing with her family the most spectacular meals, especially during the holidays and every Sunday.
Visitation was held Monday, August 6, at Boone Funeral Home South (1804 S. Hutchinson Ave.) in Adel, Georgia, from 6 pm-8 pm. The funeral was held Tuesday, August 7, at Lenox Christian Fellowship Church in Lenox, Georgia, at 2:00 pm. The funeral was officiated by Pastors Jimmy Parker, Tommy Dorman, and Jimmie Hinson. The pallbearers were Parker and Jey Castleberry, Bruce and Carl Varnadoe, Ray Peele and Maxie Parker. Special musical selection played at the service were "Agnus Dei," "In the Garden," "You Raise Me Up," "Amazing Grace" and "Jerusalem."
The family extends sincerest gratitude to the many people who assisted Mrs. Hancock with love and comfort in her final years, especially Jewel Bryan.
