Obituary

Elizabeth Sangster Easters, 83, departed this world on Thursday July 17, 2014 at her home in Lenox, Georgia after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Easters was born in Dooly County April 20, 1931 to the late Thomas Matthew and Cardine Sangster. She was also preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Owen Easters; a sister, Mary Edith Willis; and a great-grandchild, Aiden Owen Rosecrans. Visitation was held at Boone Funeral Home, 1804 S. Hutchinson Ave. in Adel, Georgia on Saturday evening July 19, 2014 from 7 until 9 pm. The funeral service was held Sunday July 20, 2014 at 3 pm at Lakeview Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 40 years, with Rev. Dillard Ensley, Zach Wasburn, Jonathan Brown, Sarah McClelland and Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Interment followed at Lakeview Church Cemetery. Susie Betts played the piano and Jackie Wetherington played the organ; the Betts family along with Darvin and Nancy Eason sang "I'll Fly Away" and the congregation sang "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden." Howard Moore, Andy Harrell, Terrell Rutland, Curtis Stafford, Patrick Stafford, Will Stafford, and Carl Swift served as pallbearers; The Joy and Duella Wynn Sunday School Classes served as honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Easters retired from teaching school in 1993 after 30 years, 28 of those in Cook County. After retirement, she was active in many organizations, including the Cook County Retired Teachers Association and the Camellia Garden Club. She had a love for God that she shared by teaching Sunday School and helping with children's activities. She also had a passion for growing and using healing and cooking herbs. She was known to many as "The Herb Lady." At one time she sold plants and herbs to attract butterflies and hummingbirds from a greenhouse business she and her husband opened. For many years she was a fixture at the Wiregrass Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings selling herb plants and medicinal remedies such as "Nana's Salve" and "Papa's Liniment." In her last months she worked to put some of her knowledge of plants, herbs, and remedies into a book so it could be remembered and shared with others. The book will be published posthumously. Words cannot express how Mrs. Easters touched lives with her desire to share with others in the classroom, the church, the garden, and beyond. She was a teacher everywhere she went, and among other values, she nurtured a spirit of teaching and curiosity in her children and grandchildren.

Mrs. Easters is survived by her children: Melita Easters of Atlanta, Georgia, Stanley (Judy) Easters of Kinston, North Carolina, Aaron (Kim) Easters of Bishopville, South Carolina, Jobeth Easters and Wildean Easters-McClelland, both of Lenox; three siblings: Caroline Sangster Hightower of Gray, Georgia, Thomas Nathaniel Sangster of Unadilla, Georgia, And Joseph Matthew Sangster of Sparks, Georgia. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Casey (Amy) Marshall, Rosa (Mike) Fischer, Feraby (Keith) Moye, Christina Hayes (fiance Kevin Sheils), Heather (Lance) Rosecrans, Vanessa (Zachary) Washburn, Sarah McClelland (fiancé Jonathan Brown), Abigail Daughtrey, Patrick (Courtney) Easters, Jeremiah McClelland, Kristen Easters, Benjamin Daughtrey, Sidney Easters, and Avarie Easters; and seven great-grandchildren: Brandon, Megan, and Mandi Marshall; Haley, Liam, and Annaluz Washburn; and Owen Fischer.

In lieu of flowers, Mrs Easters requested donations be made to the The ABAC Foundation for the Georgia Museum of Agriculture to be used for the upkeep of the herb garden at the doctor's office that Mrs. Easters helped to revitalize and redesign at the Agrirama (ABAC 13, 2802 Moore Highway, Tifton, Georgia 31793; please put in memo line: Dr.'s office garden at GMA (Elizabeth's Garden)), or to Lakeview Baptist Church where she helped teach others about the love of God (Lakeview Baptist Church, 2091 Lakeview Church Road; Lenox, Georgia 31737).
