Mrs. Lucille Sumner, 98, of Sparks, Georgia passed away October 30, 2014 at the Berrien Nursing Center in Nashville, Georgia. She was born in Cook County on March 12, 1916 to the late Gilbert Bryan Mathis and Winnie Connell Mathis. Mrs. Sumner was a member at Brushy Creek Baptist Church and a homemaker. She had lived in Cook County all of her life. She was the widow of the late William Grady Sumner.
Mrs. Sumner is survived by her three sons and a daughter-in-law: Roy G. and Jean Sumner of Adel, Georgia, Charles Sumner of Valdosta, Georgia and James Ray Sumner of Sparks; Grandchildren: Brent Sumner of Warner Robins, Georgia; Ricky Sumner of Adel, Georgia; Kevin Sumner of Moultrie, Georgia; Derek Sumner of Asheville, North Carolina; Wade Sumner of Valdosta; Chris Sumner of Valdosta; Stevie Sumner of Warner Robins; Lynn Stephenson, Tina Sumner and Jason Sumner all of Sparks; numerous Great-Grandchildren and several Great-Great-Grandchildren; her sister; Mary Nell Strackie of Tampa, Florida; Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons: Eugene Sumner and Wayne Sumner.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the Brushy Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Dillard Ensley and Rev. Jimmy Parker officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Grandsons Ricky Sumner, Kevin Sumner, Brent Sumner, Wade Sumner, Jason Sumner, Chris Sumner, and Stevie Sumner served as active pallbearers; other grandchildren and great-grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers. Jack and Betty Joiner sang "In the Garden" and "Amazing Grace;" Bettye Joiner also played the piano.
