Obituary

Mrs. Merle Connell Mitchell, 100, of Adel, Georgia, passed away at home on February 28, 2015. She was born March 14, 1914 in what was then Berrien County, but is now Cook County, to the late Daniel Samuel Connell and Emma Roberts Connell. She lived her entire life in Cook County and served her family as a devoted homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Adel, the Garden Club, and Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Dorothy H. Mitchell of Nashville, Georgia; two daughters and a son-in-law: Bettye Mitchell Fleuren of McDonough, Georgia, and Debbie Mitchell Bradford and her husband, Mike, of Adel; a daughter-in-law, Martha B. Allen of McDonough; ten grandchildren: Eve Allen Hayes, Tonya Allen Lunsford, James "Jim" Gordon Mitchell, John Hoffpauier Mitchell, Edward William Fleuren, Jr., Phillip Mitchell Fleuren, Daniel Lewis Fleuren, Shelley Fleuren Morgan, Raechel Leanne Bradford, and Whitney Bradford Conkling; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Mitchell; two sons: Bobby Joe Allen and James Gordon Mitchell; a grandson, Doug Allen; six sisters: Vera Connell Hughes, Valliedell Hutchinson, Verdie Belle Connell Griner, Thelma Connell Sharpe, Willa Connell Parrish, and Hazel Louise Connell; and a brother, D.J. Connell.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell were held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 2, 2015, at First Baptist Church of Adel with Dr. Mike Ruffin and Rev. Bill Marlette officiating. Interment followed at Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel. The family received friends at the church one hour prior to the services. Jim Mitchell, John Mitchell, Phil Fleuren, Daniel Fleuren, Macklin Hayes, and Slaton Lunsford served as pallbearers. Sheila Humber played "Ave Maria" and a medley of "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art", and "It Is Well" on the piano; Mrs. Humber also accompanied Dr. Tom Fausett, who played saxophone, on a rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In."
