Mrs. Mildred Westmoreland Knight, 88, of Adel, Georgia passed away June 11, 2016 at the Presbyterian Home in Quitman, Georgia following a long illness. She was born September 12, 1927 in Cook County to the late Robert Lee Westmoreland,Sr. and Myrtle Short Westmoreland formerly of Dalton, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband Calvin C. Knight; three brothers: R.L. Westmoreland, Jr., Erwin Westmoreland and Earl Westmoreland; three sisters: Frances Mathis, Mary Nell Mathis and Ethel Doris Day.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law: Robin and Patricia Knight of Adel and Stuart Knight of Atlanta, Georgia; one grandson, Matthew Calvin Knight of Adel; one brother, Farrell Westmoreland of Newbern, NC; brother-in-law, E.M. Mathis, Jr. of Quitman, Georgia and sister-in-law, Marion Westmoreland of Albany, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews.
She spent most of her life in Cook County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Adel. She was a retired clerk with the US Postal Service, an Honorary Major in the Salvation Army and an Honorary Member of the Georgia Sheriff Youth Homes. Mrs. Knight was the first Adel lady to become a licensed pilot. She had a bookmark ministry in English and Spanish entitled "How To Know From The Bible That You Are Going to Heaven". She has given away over three million copies of the bookmarks in English and Spanish to people in several countries including the US.
A graveside service was held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Adel, Georgia with Rev Bill Marlette officiating. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to World Hunger, C/O First Baptist Church of Adel or The Sheriffs Youth Homes in Hahira, Georgia.
