Roy G.
Sumner
Nov 10, 1938 — Apr 19, 2026
Adel
Mr. Roy Gilbert Sumner, age 87, went on to meet his Savior on April 19, 2026. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones. Roy was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather whose life was a testament to hard work, perseverance, patriotism and devotion.
Roy was born on November 10, 1938 in the Chaserville Community of Cook County to Grady and Lucille Sumner. He grew up on a farm in Cook County where he learned a strong work ethic and a love for the land. Roy left the farm in 1956 to join the United States Air Force where he served eight years active duty as a jet engine mechanic. After serving his country he worked for Delta Airlines for four years. His passion for farming never left, so he returned to Cook County 1968 to start his own farm. In 1977 he had a chance to buy Pine Valley Store, an Agri Supply business in western Cook County. Pine Valley was also a grocery store, gas, and hardware store. Roy was a very generous person and helped many small farmers and rural families survive the hard economic times of the late 1970s. In 1984 he had a renewed interest in serving in the military and enlisted in the Air Force National Guard where he served as a communication specialist and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1998. As farming became harder to make a living in the early 1980s, Roy had an opportunity to take a job at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany GA where he worked for 25 years and retired in 2012. After retiring, Roy enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife of 56 years, Erma Jean. He loved to go fishing in the Little River pursuing his favorite fish the Red Breast Bream. After losing his beloved Erma Jean in 2016, Roy spent most of his time visiting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren where he was affectionately known as G-Daddy.
Roy is survived by three sons: Brent Sumner (Teresa) of Warner Robins, Kevin Sumner (Suzanne) of Moultrie, Ricky Sumner (Kelly) of Adel; six Grandchildren: Bryan Sumner, Will Sumner, Ty Sumner (Sara), Kylee Raulerson (Tyler), Hart Sumner (Cara), Hayes Sumner; eight Great Grandchildren: Zoe Sumner, Noa Sumner, Kaden Raulerson, Thompson Sumner, Hadlee Raulerson, Truett Sumner, Wes Raulerson, and Olivia Sumner. He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife of 56 years, Erma Jean Lasseter Sumner,
and a granddaughter, Audrey Lynn Sumner.
A visitation will be held from1:00 to 3:00 PM on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at Boone Funeral Home (1804 S. Hutchinson Ave. in Adel). A graveside service with military honors will take place at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at the Woodlawn Cemetery Annex with Rev. Joey Taylor officiating. Interment will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital ( www.stjude.org or by mail to 262 Danny Thomas Place, MS 721; Memphis, Tennessee 38105); or to the upkeep of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens; P.
