Mr. Van W. Phillips, Sr., 82, of Adel, Georgia, passed away at his home April 8, 2016. He was born March 12, 1934 in Adel to the late John Otis Phillips and Bessie McDaniel Phillips. Mr. Phillips served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict and was a member of Springhead Baptist Church. He and his family lived in the Jacksonville and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida area for many years where he served as a merchandise manager for J.C. Penney. After Florida he lived in Cordele, Georgia for 20 years where he was the owner of a Western Auto Store before coming back home to Cook County in 1994.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sumner Phillips of Adel; three sons and daughters-in-law: Ricky Otis and Melanie Phillips of Adel, Van W. Jr. and Kathy Phillips of Dawson, Georgia, David and Rosa Phillips of Montezuma, Georgia; six grandchildren: Paige Leonard (Chance), Pam Holloway, Clint Harrington, Robert Phillips, Ondrea Zink (Shawn Holton), and Heatherly Chandler; nine great-grandchildren: Keeley Bahe, Kenna Zink, Kyra Zink, Ashlyn Zink, Adelyn Zink, Greyson Leonard, Ancil Chandler, Adgel Chandler, Barrow Holloway, William Holloway and Katherine Holloway;a brother and sister-in-law, James and Sara Phillips of Fitzgerald, Georgia; a sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Jim Powell of Milton, Florida; a sister-in-law, Butch Phillips of Austin, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: J.O., Harvey, and Bobby Ross Phillips; and two sisters: Gladys Cato and Ethel Leverette.
The funeral service were held at 2 pm on Monday April 11, 2016 at Springhead Baptist Church with Rev. Joey Taylor and Rev. Harris Whitman officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn City Cemetery in Adel. Active pallbearers will be Owen McDaniel, Render Folsom, Jimbo Holloway, Shawn Holton, Jerry Permenter, Malcolm Smith and Clint Harrington; honorary pallbearers will be Emmitte Frost, J.E. Harrell, Gene Barber, Dr. Mark Clegg, Settle Folsom, John Wilson, Raymond Pafford and Tyrone McDaniel. Lisa Folsom played piano and sing "Amazing Grace" and "Some Call It Heaven". In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Bethany Hospice (2517 Bemiss Road; Valdosta, Georgia 31602) or to Springhead Baptist Church (1102 Springhead Church Road; Adel, Georgia 31620).
