Obituary

Mr. Walter Loyd Martin, 94, of Adel, Georgia, passed away April 22, 2014 at his home. He was born August 20, 1919 in Ashburn, Georgia to the late James Austin Martin and Mattie Cook Martin but was raised from an early age by the late William Blake Martin and Sarah McMillan Martin. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Adel and was retired from Adel Trading Company where he worked as a salesman and was also the former owner of Sweigardt's Auto Store. He also served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II.

Mr. Martin is survived by his son, Jimmy Martin of Ray City, Georgia; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon and Gene Hannon of Adel, and Marilyn Birge of Corpus Christi, Texas; five grandchildren: Scott Freeman of Adel, Regina Sumler of Lenox, Georgia, Ronda Berry and Billie Jo Johnston, both of Corpus Christi, and Claudia Birge of Casper, Wyoming; and nine great-grandchildren. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by Evelyn Hayes Martin, his loving wife of 69 years, who passed away February 1, 2014; six brothers: Clarence, Eston, Floyd, Joe, Jesse, and Ray Martin; and four sisters: Bertie Barfield, Lorene Martin, Ada Grace, and Mrs. Bill Whitney.

A graveside funeral service took place Friday April 25, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Forest Hill Church Cemetery, 11323 Hwy. 37, in Adel with Rev. Roger Mays officiating. Scott Freeman provided the eulogy and memories of his grandfather. Special selections played at the service were "If You Could See Where I Am" and "Daddy's Hands."
